Crazy Cake preview

Crazy Cake Preview

It’s not The Great British Bake Off but it can get pretty cutthroat. Crazy Cake is a card game from Be Game Social. In this deck of cards you’ll find fun illustrations, wild cake combinations and sabotage cards that might make your opponents cake inedible.

Building Layer by Layer

The goal of Crazy Cake is to build a 3-tier cake using the cards you’ll pick up during the game. You’ll start a new turn by taking a card off the top of the draw pile or by picking up a face-up card at the top of the discard pile. If you go into the discard pile, a player cannot pick up an action card. It must be an ingredient.

Crazy Cake - 3-tiers

Ingredient cards are classified as “cake”, “filling” or “frosting”. This tells you what layer they can be used for when making a cake. On your turn you’ll play a single card from your hand into your play area or onto another players cake. No matter what, a new cake must always start with the “cake” layer and build from there.

Not all the ingredients in this game are appetizing. No one wants mutant slime on their cake because it’s -10 points to your final score. While it sounds terrible, there are instances where you might want sauerkraut at the top of your 3-tier masterpiece. Some cards give players negative points but can be reversed when paired with the right ingredients. Having a white rice “cake” with seaweed “frosting” is going to earn a player lots of points.

While your opponents try to give you disgusting ingredients, it’s super satisfying to find a pairing that turns negative ingredients into a positive. Just because someone gave you seaweed doesn’t mean you’re doomed to fail. Whether it’s an action card that allows you to discard a layer or a combination that gives you extra points, there’s always a way to recover a not so perfect tier of your cake.

Cutthroat Kitchen

Crazy Cake is all about sabotaging your opponents and making sure your cakes are supreme. Throughout the deck there are action cards that allow you to trade layers on a cake with another player, pick up new cards, get rid of an ingredient in your cake or trash another players hand. Crazy Cake can get cutthroat but it makes it perfect for trash talk around the table.

Crazy Cake sabotage

An average game of Crazy Cake takes around 15 to 20 minutes before a player accomplishes their goal of building 3 unique tiers. At the end of the game, players count up the total value of their cake and the player with the highest points win.

The game plays quick and the illustrations on the cards are hilarious. The deck is filled with Dad jokes all revolving around the food depicted on the card. My favorite has to be the swinging bananas on the banana bread “cake” card. Parents and kids are going to get a good laugh throughout the game.

This is the first card game from Be Game Social and it’s an easy one to introduce to new or younger gamers. Kids are going to love sabotaging the adults at the table and building unique and gross cakes. You may never make it onto Master Chef but hopefully you can make a crazier cake than the rest of your family.

Crazy Cake is available through Kickstarter through October 8, 2021.

A prototype of the game was provided for this coverage. Components and rules covered in this preview are not finalized. Read more about our preview policies at One Board Family.

I'm a huge fan of strategy games and pretty much anything that involves "city building". My love of board games goes back to my childhood and passion for building relationships with others.
