Ghastly Games for Your Halloween Game Night

Ghastly Games for Your Halloween Game Night

2020 has been a weird year. While game nights have looked drastically different over the past 6 months, we want to share the creepy games that we’re planning to play this Halloween season. Our annual Halloween game list is something we look forward to every year. So let’s jump into it!

Scooby-Doo: Escape from the Haunted Mansion

Publisher: The OP
Number of Players: 1+
Play time: 2-4 hours
Kid friendly? 10+
Unboxing of Scooby-Doo

From top to bottom, Escape from the Haunted Mansion feels like a real Scooby-Doo mystery. The game is built on the Coded Chronicles system that uses a number system and character books to give this game its voice. Players work together to guide the Mystery Inc. team through a ghost story set in Lady Fairmont’s mansion.

Scooby-Doo: Escape from the Haunted Mansion

This mystery can be played in a single 2 to 3 hour sit down or broken up into two parts. There are plenty of puzzles to solve as your team investigates this fun ghost story. Each character has a book that players will read from as they make their way through the mansion. This is an excellent escape-style game for families and has been one of our favorite games of this genre. Carve out some time this Halloween and see if your family can escape the Haunted Mansion.

Funkoverse Nightmare Before Christmas

Publisher: Funko Games
Number of Players: 2-4
Play time: 30-45 min
Kid friendly? Yes

One of my favorite holiday movies has received the Funkoverse treatment just in time for Halloween. In the Funkoverse games, players put together a team of their favorite characters from properties like Batman, Back to the Future, Harry Potter, Golden Girls and more. There are game modes similar to “capture the flag”, king of the hill and just plain battling the other team.

Funkoverse: Nightmare Before Christmas

You can play as Jack Skellington, Sally, Dr. Finkelstein and Oogie Boogie. This new set introduces the ghostly companion Zero to work alongside Jack. Each of their abilities make so much sense for the characters of this classic animation. Oogie Boogie rolls his iconic dice and Dr. Finkelstein can create animate and attack with tokens around the board. The production quality on this set is fantastic and a must own for gamers that love this movie.

Ghostel

Publisher: Tinkerbot Games
Number of Players: 2-4
Play time: 45-60 min
Kid friendly? Yes

In Ghostel from Tinkerbot Games you’re doing what ghosts love to do. Scare people! Creepstone Manor has been reopened as a hotel for the public. The only problem is that this hotel already has residents.

Ghostel

Players take on the role of ghosts to scare the guests of the hotel. Everyone will attempt to out scare their opponent to earn the points on the guests card. Some guests have fears that can be exploited for even bigger scares. This is one that the whole family has enjoyed because of how everyone stays engaged each round. If you’re looking for a light dice placement game for your next Halloween game night, Ghostel is an excellent pick.

Hello Neighbor: The Secret Neighbor Party Game

Publisher: Arcane Wonders
Number of Players: 5-10
Play time: 20-30 min
Kid friendly? Yes

I don’t know much about the Hello Neighbor video game but I do know that a creepy mustached neighbor is terrifying. Players are given 4 cards at the start of the round. The majority of the players at the table will be kids while 2 or more (depending on the player count) will play the hidden role of the creepy neighbors.

Hello Neighbor party game

Players trade cards with one another to gather sets of 3 identical cards. Turning in sets of cards allow players to gather information about the other players or take control of the valuable key. After each round, players will do a vote of confidence in order to allow the player with the key(s) to use it. The game does a great job of keeping players guessing and doubting everyone’s identities. This is a quick and fun game that supports up to 10 players which makes it great for larger game nights.

Paranormal Detectives

Publisher: Lucky Duck Games
Number of Players: 3-6
Play time: 30-40 min
Kid friendly? Teens and Older

A great party game for this time of year would have to be Paranormal Detectives. Similar to a game like Mysterium, one player takes on the role of the ghost of the recently deceased. The detectives at the table ask questions of the ghosts to solve the crime. Each card that is played allows the ghost to interact in a variety of ways.

Paranormal Detectives

Paranormal Detectives is a really fun game that always gets us laughing. Clues are given by the ghost drawing with the detectives own hand, creating images using the hangman’s knot and 7 other unique ways to interact. It’s tough not to play back-to-back games once you get this game to the table. Check out our full play of this game last Halloween on our YouTube channel.

Friday the 13th: Horror at Camp Crystal Lake

Publisher: The OP
Number of Players: 2-4
Play time: 30-45 min
Kid friendly? Teens and older
Unboxing of Friday the 13th

Welcome to Camp Crystal Lake! Up to 6 campers can press their luck against the infamous Jason Vorhees. This new game is a reskin of Quartz (Snow White & the Seven Dwarfs: A Gem Mining Game) that has players collecting supplies and trying to avoid meeting Jason before heading to their cabin.

Friday the 13th

Players draw from a bag and try to collect sets of supplies to gain points. Pulling two Jason tokens during the night will have you drop your supplies and run back to your cabin. Friday the 13th works so well as a press-your-luck game because every pull of the bag can put you one step closer to disaster. Even owning the original Quartz, this was a must own for our Halloween game nights this year.

Escape: Zombie City

Publisher: Queen Games
Number of Players: 2-4

The Escape series of games that has spawned numerous expansions and rethemes over the years. Escape: Zombie City is a game from 2014 that takes the real-time action and places it in a city overrun by the undead. A 15 minutes soundtrack guides the players as they search the city for supplies to fill the bus and get out of town.

Escape: Zombie City

If you’re a fan of quick, chaotic games, Escape: Zombie City will be a great fit. Players are chucking dice and working together to fight off the brain munchers. This is a great option for gaming with kids and it keeps everyone involved with no down time.

I'm a huge fan of strategy games and pretty much anything that involves "city building". My love of board games goes back to my childhood and passion for building relationships with others.
